William Lewans is a Canadian baritone now specializing in the Verdi and Wagner roles. He possesses a rich clear tone described as a “compact, vibrant, rock-steady sound that was startling and impressive” (Ken Winters, Globe and Mail, Canada).
William has performed throughout Canada. His roles have included Figaro and Antonio in Marriage of Figaro, Masetto/Commendatore in Don Giovanni, the Bonze in Madama Butterfly, Bottom in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Gianni Schicchi, Dottor Bartolo in Il Barbiere di Sivilglia, Don Alfonso in Cosi Fan Tutte, Marchese d’Obigny in La Traviata, Crespel in Tales of Hoffman, Frank in Die Fledermaus, Baron Zeta in The Merry Widow, Mr. Olsen in Street Scene, the title role in King Arthur and Hunding in Die Walküre.
Aspiring at first to become a concert pianist, William completed a Masters Degree in Piano Performance from The University of British Columbia, during which he gained the opportunity of attending prestigious programs such as the Aspen Music Festival and School. He continued his journey earning a Masters Degree in Voice from the University of Western Ontario and pursued further studies at AIMS in Graz, Austria where he was chosen to perform under the baton of Cornelius Eberhardt and at Opera Nuova, Edmonton where he studied with Nico Castel.
Realizing that his voice needed the time to develop and mature, William has spent the last several years exploring new repertoire. The focus on clarity throughout his range allowed him to find the ease and power required for the rigours of the larger dramatic baritone roles. Although William is equally adept at singing operas of all composers, he is particularly suited for Verdi and Wagner.
William is an exceptionally competent pianist and musician and is at present an educator and mentor in both piano and voice in Toronto, Ontario.
